Laptops are nowadays very common in our society and daily used by millions of people and for hundreds of different purposes and that had made life much easier.
The laptop is a personal multitasking mobile personal computer of small size that is easier for an individual to carry it along with him. A laptop is of shape of a note book with a screen on the upper part and a keyboard on the lower part. The keyboard is used to give alphabets numeric or symbols as input. The first laptop introduced was in 1981 by Adam Osborne and named it Osborne 1 which was about 25 pound and a 5 inches screen. The first laptop almost cost 1800 dollars at that time. With the passage of time the weight of laptop has been reduced to 1.41 pounds and the screen has widened to about 20 inches (laptop are today available in a variety of weights, shapes, sizes and screen wideness and resolution and a wide variety of prices). This first laptop had no battery.
Laptops are provided with batteries so they can be used when the electricity is not available etc. the first laptop with a battery was introduced in 1981 and named Epson HX-20. This laptop for the reason was sold a lot in the market.
Laptops are manufactured by many companies around the world most of which the companies belong to US, Taiwan, China. Other than these many other countries are there which manufactures laptops. There are many companies who have stopped their production due to some reasons while some companies have grown very large and are manufacturing a large variety of products. More or less companies have merged into others while some have signed joint venture with the growing companies.

LENOVO is a word that is formed by the combination of two le means legend and novo means new. LENOVO is a Chinese multinational company founded in the year 1984. It holds market share of 20.1%. It is a vendor type of company that manufactures personal computers, tablets, smartphones, workstations, servers, electronic storage devices, IT management software, and smart televisions. Defunct models and companies of laptops
- Acron computers:
Acron computers was established in1978 in UK and has produced a number of products but ceased its production in 2000 due to heavy losses and dire financial situation.
- Alien ware:
This company was originated by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aquila in 1995 which used to produce desktops, workstation, PC gaming consoles and notebooks. In 2002 the Dell Company bought it and it is now a supplementary of Dell Company.
- Compaq:
This company was founded by Rod Canion, Jim Harris and Bill Murto in 1982. They developed, sold and supported computers and related products. They manufactured the first personal computer of IBM and became great suppliers of their time. This company was overtaken by HP in 2002 for a great deal of amount.
- Digital Equipment Corporation:
Digital Equipment Corporation was a major American company from the 1950s to 1990s. It was a leading vendor of computer systems, software’s, and other computer accessories. It was attained by Compaq in 1998.
- eMachines:
This company was founded in 1998 which was acquired in 2004 by Gateway Inc. which then in 2007 was acquired by Lenovo Inc. Acer manufactured under this name till 2013 and then terminated their product under the brand.
- Everex
The company was formed in the year 1983 in USA. In 1993 the company filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by Formosa Plastics Group, hence becoming part of a multinational corporation together with companies like First International Computer, the world’s leading motherboard manufacturer. In 2006 Everex Systems, and in 2008 New Market Technology has occupied control of Everex.
- Fujitsu Siemens:
Fujitsu Siemens was a Japanese and German vendor of Information Technologies. The establishment was formed in 1999 as a joint venture between Fujitsu Limited of Japan and Siemens of Germany. In 2009, the company became Fujitsu Technology Solutions as a consequence of Fujitsu purchasing the Siemens’ share of the company.
- Gateway Computers:
Gateway computers was initiated in 1985 in USA. It manufactured PCs, monitors, servers, and computer accessories. The company got fame till the year 1991. The company worked till it was credited by Acer in 2007. Gateway products are now sold in the Americas and Asia.
- Gericom:
Gericom was Australian computer manufacturing company founded in 1990. It manufactured a great number of products and was going on well but due to dramatic drop of sales figures and 93% loss from 2003 to 2008 decreased the sales and quality of the company’s products. Majority of the shares of the company were then bought by a Taiwanese company and changed the name of the company to Quanmax AG.
- Packard Bell:
Packard Bell was initiated by Herbert “Herb” A. Bell and Leon S. Packard in 1933 in USA. In the late 1990s had become a subsidiary of NEC and stopped its North American operations while in the time being intensifying overseas and turn out to be a foremost trademark in the European PC souks. In 2008 it was acquired by the Taiwanese consumer electronic firm Acer. Packard Bell products are sold in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
- Voodoo PC:
Voodoo PC was an extravagance personal computer brand. It was started in 1991, and 2006 Hewlett Packard declared they would acquire the establishment which is now the titleholder of the company.
